About Leica Cameras
In the optical factory, which had, since 1849, successfully produced high end microscopes in Leitz, Wetzlar, Oskar Barnack, wanting to depart from the heavier cameras of the time, started tinkering with the idea of reducing negatives for later enlargement. As a manager, he was able to put his dream into action and developed the Ur-Leica, one of the first small format cameras. By doubling the 18 x 24 cinema format, he was able to produce the 24 x 36 format.
By 1925 (the onset of World War had delayed production), he had produced the Leica A, which was an incredibly flexible small-format camera. Photographers rapidly adopted the new, uncomplicated, and fast method of capturing images and were able, as a result to focus on taking profound pictures, some of which influenced our outlook on the world.
As a result of Leicas supeior picture taking ability, users can focus on the subject and the picture. Building upon its first innovation, Leica continues to develop tools that enhance and re-enforce the singular vision and the unlimited possibilities it stands for.
